LOCKPORT – Niagara County agencies have been allocated $640,000 in state funds for a new program to develop strategies to combat and prosecute violent crimes committed with guns.
The GIVE program, standing for Gun Involved Violence Elimination, is the successor as of July 1 to Operation IMPACT, a state-funded anticrime program being discontinued after 10 years. The money was made available to the 17 counties outside New York City with the most gun crimes.
The County Legislature is to vote Tuesday on accepting one-year GIVE grants of $149,795 to the District Attorney’s Office, $105,094 to the Sheriff’s Office and $63,193 to the Probation Department. The balance of the state allocation will go to the Niagara Falls Police Department, District Attorney Michael J. Violante said.
The money includes funding to pay the salaries of one assistant district attorney and one corrections officer, both of whom were previously paid with Operation IMPACT funds.
