LOCKPORT – Niagara County will be hiring a new assistant public defender for work in Family Court, thanks to a grant from the state Office of Indigent Legal Services.

The County Legislature will vote Tuesday on accepting a $185,723 state grant, to be paid over three years, to cover the salary and benefits for a fifth public defender to work in Family Court. Public Defender David J. Farrugia said that hiring will reduce the caseload from about 250 cases per attorney to 200 cases each.

The past-time job is to pay $39,271 a year, with benefits for the second half of the year costing an additional $9,366. The new attorney is to start work July 7.
