WHEATFIELD – Police patrolled the Niagara-Wheatfield high school and middle school campus throughout the day today after rumors on social media over the weekend came to the attention of school staff.

An automated phone alert went out to parents of Niagara-Wheatfield high school and middle-schoolers this morning that said, “We know there are rumors circulating on social media in regards to comments made in relation to safety at the high school and middle schools. Each instance was investigated by the Lewiston Police, the Niagara County Sheriff, the State Police and the Town of Niagara Police. At this time no one is believed to be in danger. Students are safe. Lewiston Police are here and will have an increased police presence to further ensure their safety throughout the day.”

Lewiston Police, assisted by State Police, remained on campus throughout the day as a precaution. They noted on their own police Facebook that no other schools are involved in the investigation.

Authorities did not reveal the nature of the threats that prompted the added security.
