LOCKPORT – As of Thursday evening, a new $30,000 leak detector had failed to find the source of water flooding into the foundation of Lockport’s new ice arena, which is supposed to open in September.

Mayor Anne E. McCaffrey said the detector had determined that the broken water line was not on Market or Charles streets or East Avenue, and was taking another look at Chestnut Street, where borings in a city parking lot Tuesday and Wednesday failed to find the source of the problem.

McCaffrey said Dale Lawson Jr., the city’s water chief, warned her that it is possible the source of the downhill flow into the rink could be as far away as Genesee Street, a half-mile from the arena.

The Common Council agreed to the $3,500 emergency engagement of the new leak detector with an eye toward a purchase, after the city’s 25-year-old unit came up empty in the search for the broken pipe.
