LOCKPORT – The Niagara County Legislature this week approved an allocation of the county’s discount hydroelectric power to New England Seafood, a Hartland food retailer.
The allocation is 75 kilowatts per year for three years, beginning May 1. Owner Roy Jaworski informed the county that the power is needed for improving air conditioning and a new produce refrigeration unit.
The store is expected to pay the county about $23,000 a year for the power. Nine other businesses also have deals with the county’s Empower Niagara program, which has about 500 kilowatts left to offer, Economic Development Commissioner Samuel M. Ferraro said when the deal was approved in committee last month.
New England Seafood, located in a former farm equipment dealership on Ridge Road, was one of the earliest recipients of electricity from Empower Niagara, set up with allocations from the Niagara Power Project after the New York Power Authority obtained a new license in 2005. However, the allocation lapsed after the store was sold in 2011, Ferraro said.
