LOCKPORT – The city Planning Board voted 6-1 Monday against a request for a special use permit for an electronic cigarette store on Walnut Street, where retailing is not permitted by the zoning code.

“We were worried about the smoking in the residential area, the quality of the cigarettes. We just didn’t like it,” chairwoman Charlene Seekins-Smith said Tuesday.

Jordan Bork has a deal with former alderman Dennis J. Stachera, owner of the building that houses the Hairport salon at 343 Walnut St., to open an e-cigarette store called Elite Vapors in the front portion of that building.

Bork still may approach the Common Council for a special use permit, but because the Planning Board recommended against it, the Council’s vote would have to be unanimous for the permit to be approved. Seekins-Smith said.

There are about four other such stores in Lockprot, but none needed a permit because each of them is in a retail zone.
