NEWFANE – A call is going out for donations of toys or funds to buy toys for more than 50 needy children in time for Christmas.

Denise Noble said her missions committee at First Baptist Church of Newfane has already helped distribute gifts to the parents of more than 60 children to give them for Christmas but is “in desperate need of help” in providing gifts for more than 50 additional children in Newfane, Wilson, Appleton and Gasport.

“These are the children of the working poor,” she noted. “They have jobs and can’t make ends meet,” or they’ve been laid off.

Noble said she collected names of needy children through the food pantry at the church, local organizations and the Newfane schools. Last year, she had so few donations that she was only able to help provide toys for a dozen children and had to turn away many more families, she said.

“I am working on this right up to Christmas Eve so that these kids’ Christmas wishes can come true,” she said. “I don’t know how I’m going to make this happen, but I have to make it happen. I’ve had parents call me crying because they are barely buying food and barely keeping the heat on, but they want to have something on Christmas morning for their children to unwrap.

“I am asking people to help me help these people,” she added. “They are so appreciative. I had one family on my list that was able to get some toys from someone else, and when I delivered our toys to them they returned them and said to give them to someone else in need. These are the kind of people we’re helping.”

Noble is looking for new toys for boys and girls, ages 1 to 12. Money donations or gift cards may be sent to her attention to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 66, Newfane, NY 14108, and toy donations may be arranged by calling her at (585) 205-6928.
