Flood, winter storm watches in effect for weekend

Melting snow and rain could make for a very wet and soggy weekend.

A flood watch is has been issued by the National Weather Service for Saturday afternoon through Sunday evening.

“We could pick up one to two inches of rain,” warned meteorologist Tom Paone. “The rain itself – that alone is going to cause problems.”

But combined with the warming temperatures melting away the heavy snow packs from the past week of lake-effect snow that blanketed the region, Paone said there’s a strong possibility that area rivers and creeks could crest.

Paone said the heaviest rains are expected Saturday night.

Forecasters also are keeping an eye out for the possibility of freezing rain bringing up to a half inch of accumulating ice, particularly in the areas off Lake Ontario.

The weather service issued a winter storm watch for Saturday and Sunday for that possibility, but it remained unclear whether the freezing rain will transpire.
