NIAGARA FALLS – Four children found in a house where drugs were being sold were placed in a dangerous situation, according to narcotics detectives who located 66 grams of crack cocaine within feet of where two of the children were sleeping Wednesday morning.
Narcotics detectives and the city Emergency Response Team served a warrant in the 400 block of 20th Street just before 7 a.m.
The target, James A. Powell, 28, of that address, had allegedly been selling crack cocaine at the house for an extended period of time, according to Narcotics Detective Capt. David LeGault.
Powell was charged with third-degree criminal sale and possession of a controlled substance, both felonies, after detectives located the crack cocaine.
Powell, the father of four children in the house and Stacy M. Rodgers, 27, the children’s mother, who also resided in the 20th Street address, were both charged with endangering the welfare of a child after two boys, ages 10 and 6 and two boys under six months old were found in the house.
LeGault said the 6-year-old and a six-month-old were found sleeping in the same room, just a few feet away, from where detectives uncovered the crack cocaine. Child Protective Services were called to the house, and the children were turned over to their grandmother.
Rodgers, found in possession of suboxone, without a prescription for the controlled narcotic, was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.
Animal control and the SPCA of Niagara were called to take control of a dog at the scene. Police found a magazine for a rifle, but no gun was found.
According to LeGault, city inpections found minor violations and temporarily condemned the house until repairs are made.
