Driver fails to stop and overturns his garbage truck in Cambria

CAMBRIA – The driver of a garbage truck and two employees were injured after the driver failed to negotiate a curve and overturned at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday on Shawnee Road/Route 425 at Lower Mountain Road. No other vehicles were involved and injuries were not life-threatening, according to the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office.

The City of North Tonawanda garbage truck was northbound on Route 425, loaded with garbage and headed to the dump at Modern Landfill when it came to a T-intersection at Lower Mountain Road. The truck was heading down a slight grade and the driver failed to stop at the stop sign before attempting to turn at the intersectin which caused the truck to overturn, according to Niagara County Sheriff Sgt. Kevin Mack.

The male driver, who has not been identified, was found semi-conscious and incoherent by rescue workers. He was taken by Mercy Flight to be checked at Erie County Medical Center. His injuries did not appear to be serious, according to Mack. The two male employees were taken to DeGraff Memorial Hospital for treatment of what officials described a minor injuries.

Mack said the truck did not spill diesel in the crash, but leaked hydraulic fluids, which were contained in the cab of the truck by the Niagara County Haz Mat team.
