A Niagara Falls man remained in custody Monday on charges of allegedly assaulting a U.S. Border Patrol officer during an incident outside a Niagara Falls hotel.

Felix Santos, 41, was remanded by U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeremiah J. McCarthy pending a mental health examination.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Edward H. White said Santos was arrested outside a hotel on Third Street last week after he allegedly assaulted a border patrol officer who had been flagged down by a hotel employee seeking help because Santos would not leave the hotel. As the officer was checking Santos’ identification, the suspect allegedly assaulted him.

White would not identify the officer but indicated he subdued and handcuffed Santos until Niagara Falls police took him into custody. He said the officer also suffered a bruised knee and a minor facial abrasion.
