YOUNGSTOWN – They’ll be dancing in the streets – quite literally – from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday where Main Street meets Lockport Street to celebrate the village’s unofficial start of summer.
This is the fifth year the Youngstown Business and Professional Association will sponsor the free event, which coincides with the last day of school for those in the Lewiston-Porter School District.
New this year, however, will be the addition of a vintage car show and a display of one of Youngstown’s new Niagara Jet Adventures boats.
“The first year we held this, we had about 400 to 500 people,” said Cheryl Butera, president of the business association. “Last year, we had around 1,500, and we expect quite a few more this year.”
Carl Motyka, with Up the Ante, will provide the live music for the dance, while a bounce house and pony rides round out the entertainment.
Also, local vendors, including many familiar village businesses and community organizations, will sell food, drink and merchandise, while free popcorn and beach balls will be provided by the Youngstown Lions Club and Anchor Spirits.
“The police will close off the streets starting about 4 p.m., and Hinman Street will be closed this year, too, for the vintage car show,” Butera added. “We wanted to have something for the adults, too. There are no prizes, this is just for fun. Vintage cars are from 1980 and older. They can come to Hinman Street at 4 p.m. and park their beautiful cars and know that there is a police presence there.”
The event is held rain or shine.
“This is a chance for parents to bring their kids and get to mix and mingle,” said Village Trustee Tim Adamson. He serves as the Village Board and Recreation Department’s liaison to the business association. “It’s good, healthy clean fun.”
The Youngstown Village Board, Recreation Department, Youngstown police and Youngstown Volunteer Fire Company also support the event.
“The theme is fun,” Butera said. “This is the last day of school and the beginning of summer vacation. Let’s get this party started, especially after the horrible winter we had. Youngstown is known as a quiet, quaint little village – well not on this day!”
