LOCKPORT – Even though Republican committee members are circulating nominating petitions for him, GOP Alderman Ronald A. Franco said at Wednesday’s Council meeting that he hasn’t decided whether to actually run in this fall’s election for the 2nd Ward seat.

Franco, a first-time officeholder, was appointed to that post by Mayor Anne E. McCaffrey after she became mayor on the resignation of Michael W. Tucker Feb. 21. The appointment was good only until Dec. 31, and a special election for the final year of the term is being held in November.

Franco, a commercial airline pilot, spends much of his time outside of Lockport. If nominating petitions are filed in his name by the July 10 deadline, Franco still could back out of the race by signing a letter of declination, which would allow the Republican committee on vacancies to nominate a replacement candidate.

No Democratic candidate has come forward so far.
