Three state legislators representing Niagara County asked Wednesday for the length of the public comment period on CWM Chemical Services’ proposed new hazardous waste landfill to be doubled to 120 days.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation opened a 60-day comment period Wednesday on the company’s request for a 43.5-acre, 4 million-cubic yard landfill in Porter, to replace the current landfill, which the company says is running out of space.

Assemblywoman Jane Corwin said, “Sixty days is simply not enough time to fully read, research, and comment on all of the documents and paperwork involved in the CWM expansion proposal. We need to give this proposal the absolute highest level of scrutiny.”

Corwin, R-Clarence, sent the request along with Assemblyman John D. Ceretto, R-Lewiston, and State Sen. George D. Maziarz, R-Newfane.
