LOCKPORT – The Town of Lockport will hold a public information meeting at 7 p.m. May 19 in Town Hall for residents of Shimer Drive and Locust Street Extension who are interested in details about upcoming water line and sidewalk projects.
The town plans to replace an aging 6-inch water main on Shimer Drive between Snyder Drive and Locust Street Extension with a new 8-inch line.
However, Town Engineer Robert D. Klavoon said Monday that the plans call for 28 homes on Shimer to be connected to a temporary 3-inch pipe during the project, which is supposed to last four weeks, starting no sooner than mid-August.
That 3-inch pipe will be laid on the surface of the ground, running across lawns and driveways. Klavoon said hard plastic covers will conceal and protect the pipe on driveways.
The water service is to be connected to the hose spigots outside the houses, “back-feeding” the water into the homes. Klavoon said the water from the temporary line will not go through water meters, meaning the town will lose an estimated $115 in revenue during the 28-day period.
Town Supervisor Marc R. Smith said two fire hydrants will be operating, one at each end of the block, but the two in between will be turned off. He said there will be three new hydrants in addition to the two at each end of the block when the project is finished.
Klavoon said the contractor will be told damages will have to be paid to the town if the job takes longer than 28 days. He said he will ask the Town Board on June 2 to vote to seek bids. The contract will be awarded in July.
Klavoon said that during the work, the water pressure on the street “may be down a little, but it won’t be a trickle.”
The new pipe will be laid in the same trench as the old one, which is 2 feet off the south shoulder of the road.
On the north side of Shimer, as well as the west side of Locust, new sidewalks will be laid. Smith said the sidewalks will be paid for by Walmart, part of its commitment to improve neighborhood infrastructure in time for completion of its new supercenter on the Lockport Mall site. The store is to open sometime this fall.
However, the water line project will be paid for by the town, Smith said. West of Snyder Drive, water service to businesses on the south side of the road will be drilled beneath the pavement as new water lines are laid to serve Walmart, the supervisor added.
In another matter, the board received word from the state Department of Transportation that the speed limit on Ambleside Drive and Rydalmount Road has been reduced from 30 mph to 20 mph. The residential roads lie behind the DeSales Catholic School campus.
