LEWISTON – As the last bits of winter – hopefully – are left behind, everyone begins to look forward to warmer weather. The 19th annual Family Spring Fling offers an opportunity for families to get outside with the kids and celebrate, rain or shine, from 1 to 4 p.m. next Sunday at the Village Hall/Red Brick School, 145 N. Fourth Street.
The event is sponsored by the Village of Lewiston Recreation Department and is free and open to both residents and nonresidents.
Spring Fling favorites include:
• The one-mile fun run for youth ages 14 and under, sponsored by the Lewiston Kiwanis and Lewiston Service Guild. Registration begins at 11:45 a.m. in front of the Red Brick School, corner of Onondaga and North Fourth streets. There is no cost to enter and prizes will be awarded in different age categories. The race begins at 12:30 p.m. The first 100 registrants will receive free race shirts, courtesy of the sponsors.
Applications and parent permission are required. Parents are allowed to run with younger runners. Volunteers are invited to contact the recreation department at 754-1900 or 754-8271 if they would like to help with race safety.
• At 1 p.m. there will be an encore presentation of Historic Postcards of Lewiston, sponsored by the Lewiston Museum, in the Red Brick School gym. The series of postcards are a selection that is not normally available to the public.
• Also at 1 p.m. there will be a street art contest for all school age children. Chalk will be provided and works of art will be judged at 3 p.m.
There also will be a basket auction from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Some of the featured auction items will be an autographed basketball from Mike Miller from the Memphis Grizzlies; tickets to local tourist sites such as Jet Boat, Artpark, Maid of the Mist, Old Fort Niagara and Castellani Art Museum; a boys bicycle; and a number of other prizes for both children and adults.
Music for the event will be provided by Asylum Productions and there will be a free petting zoo, hover car rides, and a bounce house. Niagara Pioneer Soccer will offer a “Soccer Kick Speedometer” for budding soccer players. There also will be a balloon sculptor and face painter from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Those attending are invited to share in the community atmosphere of Spring Fling by bringing a dessert to pass. Hot dogs and drinks will be provided at no cost to each family.
