LOCKPORT – Yes, spring really started this past week. Get ready with three spring gardening classes at the Cornell Cooperative Education Center, 4487 Lake Ave., Lockport.

The classes are open to the public. The cost is $10 per class, which includes supplies.

Classes will be taught by John Farfaglia, horticulturist at Cornell Cooperative Education Center – Niagara County.

Here is the lineup:

• Pruning Trees, Shrubs and Vines – 7 p.m. April 16. Learn proper pruning techniques and timing for common landscape trees, shrubs and vines for the upcoming season. Correct pruning promotes many factors, including health, size control, flowering and fruiting in plants.

• Gardening in Small Places – 7 p.m. April 23. You can still have a successful garden with limited space. See examples of various raised beds, container gardens and other techniques that can be used where space is at a premium. Many of these methods help reduce maintenance and overcome poor soil quality issues.

• Know Your Trees – 10 a.m. May 17. Enjoy a spring tree and wildflower identification walk through Royalton Ravine Park in Gasport. Meet at Cornell Cooperative Education greenhouse at 10 a.m. for a short preview and handouts. Participants, who should dress appropriately, will carpool to the park.

Those who are interested must register in advance by calling Karen at 433-8839, Ext. 221, or email kmk27@cornell.edu. For more information, contact John at 433-8839, Ext. 226, or email jaf2@cornell.edu.
