It was 3 degrees below zero this morning outside the National Weather Service’s office at Buffalo Niagara International Airport – and that was the warmest temperature recorded around daybreak.
“The big winner was Franklinville – 27 below,” said meteorologist Jon Hitchcock.
Temperatures plummeted during the clear, moonlit night, but no records were broken – at least not at the airport. The record low temperature of minus 10 was established in 1979, Hitchcock said.
Other temperatures reported to the weather service in the past couple of hours include: 10 below at the Niagara Falls International Airport, 9 below in Youngstown, 13 below in Wales and 20 below at both the Jamestown airport and in Alfred.
It’ll eventually warm up to the lower 20s by late afternoon, Hitchcock said.
“It will be a nice, sunny day and not much wind, either,” he said.
The big storm that is predicted to sweep northeast through the Appalachians and the East Coast for the next three days will miss us completely.
The only inconvenience will be for travelers heading to or from Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Charlotte and Atlanta in the coming days. Flights to and from those cities from Buffalo Niagara International Airport may be delayed or canceled.
As of 10 a.m. this morning, eight flights coming to or from the airport had been canceled. They involved New York, Charlotte and Atlanta routes.
