That second storm system previously predicted for this weekend appears to be weakening.
But temperatures will remain below normal, with highs in the teens and lows in the single digits. And there is chance of some snow almost every day for at least the next week, according to the National Weather Service.
“It looks like we won’t have major snow in the next few days, but people will notice the cold. The wind chill will take things below zero,” said meteorologist Kirk Apffel.
The storm on Wednesday brought 8.8 inches of snow over 24 hours, shattering the record of 5.2 inches for that day set in 1916.
So far this season, the area has had 90.6 inches of snow, making the winter of 2013-14 to date the ninth snowiest ever in Buffalo history.
And that does back 144 years, Apffel said.
The record was set in 1977 with 172.9 inches of snow.
For Friday, the National Weather Service forecasts a 20 percent chance of scattered flurries before 7 a.m., then a slight chance of snow showers between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. It will be partly sunny, with a high near 14 but wind chill values as low as minus 15.
