LOCKPORT – Recycling increased in the Town of Lockport in 2013, but so did the amount of trash thrown away, according to figures released Monday.

Councilman Paul W. Siejak said the town’s residents and businesses recycled 1,196 tons of trash last year, up almost 34 tons, or 5.5 percent, from the 2012 total. But the amount of solid waste not recycled also rose, by 240 tons, or 3.74 percent, to 6,653 tons.

The total of disposed and recycled waste in 2013 was 7,849 tons, an increase of nearly 274 tons, or 3.6 percent.

The recycling rate was 15.24 percent, which was down one-tenth of 1 percent from the 2012 rate.

Those figures don’t include the 30 tons of electronics dropped off at the town highway garage for recycling last year. The town was paid $3,783 for that, an increase of $825 from 2012.
