New York Times loves Niagara Falls

NIAGARA FALLS – The City of Niagara Falls is in with some nice company, thanks to an international media outlet.

The New York Times placed Niagara Falls on its recently published list of “52 Places to Go in 2014.”

The Times’ global list also includes countries like Namibia and Ecuador, cities like Athens and Vienna, as well the Vatican.

The article on the Falls says it “is now evolving into a draw for those who love food as well as those who seek thrills.”

It mentions the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute downtown, as well as the Griffon Pub, a gastropub in the Town of Niagara.

It also features a picture of a War of 1812 encampment at Old Fort Niagara.

The article also mentions the “growing wine scene” on the Canadian side, as well as the Hornblower Cruises boat tours below the falls, a recreational trail for biking and War of 1812 re-enactments on the Ontario side.

It’s a bit of national exposure for the Falls that would have cost a lot of money to obtain otherwise.

The international attention comes on top of some other favorable press earlier this week when the falls got attention for becoming a winter wonderland when the combination of snow, ice and frigid weather created the ice bridge across to Canada, a phenomenon that does not occur every winter.

Niagara Falls tourism officials are hoping to attract more visitors during the winter season, which creates a dramatically different look at the natural wonder.
