The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra will perform at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration in Kleinhans Music Hall at 6 p.m. Sunday. Also appearing will be a chorus led by Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus music director Erin Freeman.
The theme of the free event is “The Man, the Dream, the Legacy.” Mayor Byron W. Brown will give the keynote speech, followed by performances by the Hutchinson-Central Technical High School Band, Miss Barbara’s School of Dance and the African American Cultural Center Dancers.
The program is organized by Concern Citizens Following the Dream. It is the region’s longest-running observation of King’s birthday.
Other events to mark King’s birthday include:
• The Buffalo History Museum hosts its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Remembrance Program at 3 p.m. Sunday in collaboration with the African American Historical Association. Admission is free.
• Bishop Richard J. Malone will be the main celebrant at a Mass and commemoration of the life of King at 2 p.m. Sunday in SS. Columba and Brigid Church,75 Hickory St. The Rev. Chester P. Smith of St. Rita Church in Indianapolis will be the guest homilist.
A reception and basket raffle will be held after the Mass, with proceeds benefiting the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Fund.
• The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday will be marked with a day of service from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at Cleveland-Hill United Methodist Church, 546 Eggert Road.
Buffalo Promise Neighborhood families and volunteers from the Western New York Regional Volunteer Center at the Service Collaborative of Western New York and from the church will work on the building’s renovation.
Children’s activities will include making friendship bracelets for veterans and “I have a dream”-themed crafts, along with watching the video “My Friend Martin.”

• Volunteers in the Village of Hamburg are also joining in the collaborative’s day of service Monday, collecting canned goods and other donations for the Food Bank of Western New York from homes in the village.
Residents have been provided with bags to fill, and the bags will be picked up by AmeriCorps and YouthBuild members, students and other volunteers.
The day begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Hamburg Memorial Youth Center.
• The Explore & More Children’s Museum, 300 Gleed Ave., East Aurora, will have special programming from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday on the theme of diversity, acceptance and tolerance.
The museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $5; free for families participating in WIC or Arts Access, with identification.
• A prayer service in honor of King will take place at 7 p.m. Monday, in the Thomas Merton Center at St. Bonaventure University, 3261 W. State Road, St. Bonaventure, commencing with a candlelight march to the University Chapel.
The service will include spoken word, dance, prayer and silent reflection to celebrate Dr. King’s life. Tyrone A. Hall, pastor of Fresh Joy Ministries in Olean, will speak.
