NIAGARA FALLS - Awards in memory of Martin Luther King Jr. will be handed out Thursday night during a community celebration of the famed civil rights leader at Niagara Falls High School.
The free event begins at 6 p.m. in the school’s Performing Arts Center.
Sr. Beth Brosmer, executive director of Heart, Love & Soul Food Pantry, will receive the Civil Rights Achievement Award.
Matthew A. and Yvonne L. Davis, who for more than three decades have run the annual Lord’s Day Dinner, giving out free meals at Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving, will be given the Spirit of Dr. King Award.
Shaun Jenkins, a high school senior, will receive the Youth Civil Rights Achievement Award. Jenkins is a member of Leadership Niagara’s youth program, on the Usher Board at Word of Life Ministries and a teacher of the children’s church program.
The evening’s guest speaker is the Rev. Jeff Carter, pastor of Ephesus Ministries in Buffalo. Carter was the Protestant chaplain at Attica Correctional Facility for 25 years.
Organ and tissue donation is important to Carter and his family. He donated a kidney to his son, Jeffrey, in 1999.
When the family tragically lost 26-year-old daughter Rebekah in 2008, they found meaning in her death through organ and tissue donation.
Carter participated on the Donate Life float in the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, Calif., on New Year’s Day.
